Mexico arrests sex-trafficking suspect wanted by FBI in Houston

Federal police in central Mexico have captured a man wanted by the FBI for allegedly trafficking women and minors for prostitution in the United States.

The Attorney General’s Office says police acting on an anonymous tip captured Mexican suspect Gerardo Salazar on a highway in the central state of Tlaxcala.

The office says Salazar is being held for attempted bribery and possible extradition to face the U.S. charges. It said in a statement Monday that when police stopped Salazar, he offered them a house and a car to let him go.

The FBI alleges Gerardo Salazar used beatings, threats and deception to force Mexican women and girls to work as prostitutes in the Houston area in 2004 and 2005.

HOUSTON TX NEWS — The alleged leader of a human trafficking ring, Gerardo Salazar is most wanted for the sex trafficking of children and young women. On July 26, 2005, in the 339th District Court, Houston, Texas, a state arrest warrant was issued for Gerardo Salazar for the sexual assault of a child. Then, on November 9, 2005, Salazar was charged federally with sex trafficking of children, and a federal arrest warrant was issued by in the United States District Court of Texas.

The alleged leader of a group of men, which provided women and young girls for prostitution in Mexico and Houston, Salazar, is better known as “El Gallo.” Early in 2004, until July 2005, Salazar and other members of his human trafficking ring are believed to have recruited and enticed young Mexican females, including two children, to engage in prostitution. Salazar and his associates would romance the girls convincing them to come to the United States as their girlfriends. Once they reached the United States, Salazar and his traffickers forced the victims into prostitution through beatings, threats, deception, and other forms of coercion, which in some cases included rape.

Five of Gerardo Salazar’s co-conspirators have already plead guilty and are presently serving jail time.
