COPS last night vowed to hammer the trade in fake goods that bankrolls major crime gangs.

Hoods use profits from flogging dodgy fags, CDs and luxury items to fund human trafficking and buy guns and drugs, say officers.

Now those behind the counterfeit industry are being targeted by the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency.

Chief Supt Allan Moffat said: “Those involved in producing and selling fake goods are very often respon- sible for drug-dealing.

“They are also known to force people into the sex trade. They use fear, intimidation and violence. It is not a victimless crime.

“If you are buying fake goods you are helping to fund CRIME in your own community.”

Strathclyde Police recovered £2.5million of counterfeit goods during a raid at Glasgow’s Barras market in September. And they warn there will be no let-up.

Assistant Chief Constable Ruaraidh Nicolson said: “Be it tobacco, drink, clothes or DVDs, the public can be assured our pursuit of these criminals will be RELENTLESS.

“We will disrupt these shady businesses at every opportunity and come after their homes, cash, cars and personal possessions.”

Last night Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: “With the recession, families can be lured by what appear to be festive bargains. But it’s probably fake and helping to fund a criminal lifestyle.”
