Drexel search resumes after sunglasses found in North Santee

A pair of sunglasses the same kind often worn by a New York 17-year-old who has been missing for several months led to a new search near the Georgetown-Charleston County line last week. Brittanee Drexel last seen in Myrtle Beach in April was photographed in the days before her disappearance wearing sunglasses.

A pair of very similar sunglasses was found last Monday by a group of people walking near the Santee River, according to Monica Caison, founder of the Community United Effort Center for Missing Persons. She said the people who found the glasses contacted authorities because they felt it was unusual for sunglasses to be in such a place.

While the sunglasses are the same type as worn by Drexel, it’s unknown if they were actually hers. They have been sent to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for analysis. Law enforcement agents from Georgetown, Charleston and Horry Counties joined volunteers from the CUE Center in the search last week, scouring all over the North Santee area hoping the sunglasses would lead to other important information.

However, nothing else of any significance was found, authorities said. The search also involved helicopters, dive teams and an underwater scanning camera. The last place Drexel was seen was outside the Blue Water Hotel on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. Authorities say her cell phone was used in the North Santee area April 26.
