Jamaica man convicted of pimping, kidnapping

After purchasing a 20-year-old woman for prostitution and blackmailing her into not testifying against him, a St. Albans pimp was brought to justice last week when he was convicted under a new state sex trafficking law, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

The Queens jury found David Brown, 32, of 188-52 120th Road, guilty of kidnapping, sex trafficking, promoting prostitution and other charges late Dec. 1 following a long-delayed two-week trial, according to the DA. The conviction marks the latest chapter in an ongoing investigation that started last summer, when the pimp bought the victim from his ex-girlfriend, the DA said.

“This defendant has been convicted of making a troubled young woman have sex with dozens of men after ‘purchasing’ her for $2,000 from an old girlfriend,” Richard Brown said in a statement.

After he acquired the victim in August 2008, David Brown immediately told her she would be his prostitute and give him all the money she earned, the DA said. He also threatened to beat and “cut her body” if she ever left his apartment or talked to friends and family, DA Brown said.

David Brown backed up his threats by having someone watch the victim any time he left the apartment, according to the DA.

The pimp took several nude photos of the victim and posted the images on Craigslist for ads for sex services, the DA said. During a 12-day period, the victim engaged in sexual acts with 30 men in exchange for cash ranging from $60 to $200, all of which was turned over to David Brown, according to the DA.

On Aug. 23, 2008, the victim escaped the pimp, but the next morning David Brown and his alleged accomplice, Nino Isakadze, 21, found her in Far Rockaway, grabbed her and threw her into a car, the DA said.

The pair were arrested the next day and arraigned, but before a grand jury could convene, the victim had disappeared and David Brown and Isakadze were released, according to the DA.

The girl was found a month later after she was arrested for loitering for prostitution, DA Brown said. Investigators later learned that a friend of David Brown, Devon Gordon, 27, of Far Rockaway, had paid the victim not to testify and hidden her.

David Brown was subsequently rearrested and indicted and Gordon pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness, according to the DA. Isakadze, who has been indicted on rape and promoting prostitution charges, is still a fugitive.

Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise scheduled a sentencing date for Jan. 15, when David Brown faces up to 25 years in prison, according to the DA. The pimp is the first convict under the state’s sex trafficking law that was enacted in 2007.

“This office continues to use every tool allowed under the law to prosecute dangerous individuals like this defendant and to seek justice for victims,” DA Brown said.
