Dutchman returned to Peru to face charges

LIMA — A young Dutchman who is suspected in the 2005 disappearance of US teenager Natalee Holloway was returned to Peru yesterday to face charges in the slaying of a woman in his hotel room.

Police in neighboring Chile handed Joran van der Sloot over to Peruvian Interpol agents at the border city of Tacna. Officials there put a bulletproof vest on the 22-year-old and immediately took him to a police station for medical tests.

Van der Sloot said he is innocent in the death of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, but acknowledged having met her at a casino in Peru’s capital, said deputy Chilean investigative police spokesman Fernando Ovalle. He also remains the prime suspect in the disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba. Flores was killed five years to the day after Holloway disappeared. On Thursday, prosecutors in the United States charged van der Sloot with extortion in connection with the Holloway case.

Van der Sloot was handcuffed and placed aboard a police Cessna 310 in the Chilean capital, Santiago, yesterday morning. A fixture on television crime shows after Holloway’s disappearance in Aruba, the 22-year-old did not speak to or look at reporters who called to him yesterday as he was escorted onto the plane.

  1. Joran has an excellent defense regarding the baseball bat used in the alleged crime. Her prints may be on it, and if so, there you go; self-defense, and she ended up dead while Joran defended her attack. Simple as that, and I am sure Joe Tacopina will be all over that defense. He got Joran out of the Aruban fiasco before, and Joran never even got charged with a crime in Aruba even after confessing to crimes in the Holloway case. Keep an eye open, Joran may be out on the streets before very long.
